Nuclear Energy Company
In 2010 G4S Specialist Training received a request to design and deliver a 3 day Enhanced Security Officer course for personnel employed in providing security at a Nuclear Power Station. All personnel engaged in security tasks had received the standard Level 2 Security Guard training but this was deemed insufficient given the nature of the site and the threat of incursions and trespass from protesters or potential saboteurs.
G4S Specialist Training worked closely with the Security Management Team to design a bespoke course to reflect their specific operational requirements but also one that could be applied to all sites of critical national infrastructure in the U.K. The course covered advanced techniques such as the manning of covert observation posts, co-ordination of Quick reaction Teams and the principles of command and control of a security incident.
G4S Specialist Training approached City and Guilds with a view to accrediting the Enhanced Security Officer course at Level 3 and the course has now been approved by Ofqual and registered as Level 3 on the C & G system.
A pilot was successfully run in December 2011 with the Security Management reporting a marked improvement in the capability of their security staff and also a new found pride in their work reflected in attitude, deportment and efficiency. This course has become an integral part of the induction for all new staff employed, as this site continues to expand.
To validate the training and to provide embedded advice and mentoring G4S Specialist Training provides a 4 man team to support security staff at all planned protests. The support includes liaison and contingency planning with the Security Management team prior to the protest, assistance in co-ordination and setting up of control rooms, running with the Quick Reaction Teams on the ground and interfacing with representatives of the protestors and the Police force. This process has proved invaluable in creating a strong relationship between the G4S Specialist Training team, Security Managers and the workforce. It also provides a platform to reinforce the course delivery and identify any capability gaps that need addressing by the development of further training.
